It is now time for you to discover the city. Start at the Plaza de Colón, the square which is named in honour of the explorer Christopher Columbus and which contains both a huge monument to him and the largest flag in Spain. From here, move on to the Puerta de Alcalá an enormous monument with three arches, about twenty metres high, which, until the end of the 19th century, was the entry point to Madrid for those arriving from Alcalá de Henares in the east. To get to the centre of the city, pass through the Plaza Cibeles, where you will find the famous fountain and the grandiose Palacio de Comunicaciones, from where there is a wonderful panoramic view. In the Paseo del Prado, you can see the lovely buildings which house the three museums of Madrid Golden Triangle of Art Museo Nacional del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Day 2) Madrid
On your second day in the capital you can get to know the city better. Visit the spectacular Palucio Real, built as a copy of the lovely Palace at Versailles, but on a larger scale. Then climb up to the Ermita de San Antonio de la Florida, also known as Goyau2019s Pantheon, so called because of the frescoes he painted on the ceiling. His body is buried at the foot of the altar. In the evening, you will be able to experience the best flamenco in Madrid, at a very special show in a traditional tablao.
Day 3-4) Toledo
Head to Madrid Train Station and take the train to Toledo. Explore this fairy-tale city, which was once the capital of the kingdom. Visit the majestic cathedral of Santa María, with its beautiful medieval and Baroque stained-glass windows and get lost wandering through the streets of the Jewish quarter, the judiaria, where you will find the Sinagoga, built in the 14th century in the Mudejar style.
